The small village of Caxton, on the foggy Norfolk coast, holds many memories for Sarah Delaney - most of which she's tried hard to forget. For Caxton was the place where her boyfriend Tom had lived - and where he died. Now she has been sent back there in the early hours of the morning to investigate a disturbing sighting - the bodies of a man and a woman on the mist-covered beach. But by the time Sarah arrives, the tide has come in and the bodies have vanished. As a murder investigation is launched, Sarah is forced to confront the ghosts of her past.

'Humphreys knows how to push all the right buttons in this accomplished, intriguing story in which PC Sarah Delaney must come to terms with her tragic past. She is investigating the suspicious deaths of a man and a woman in a remote Norfolk village. Her former boyfriend Tom lived - and died - there years before and as she gets closer to the solution to the current crime she is led to the truth about his death. It's a clever plot, efficiently delivered, with a sympathetic central character.' Peter Guttridge, Observer 'Sleeping Partner was an auspicious and impressive debut for James Humphreys, and this successor displays the same casual assurance, notably in its nimble plotting.' Waterstones 'Surprising, disturbing and exciting' Scotsman "In thrillers, the careful conjuring of atmosphere is absolutely crucial. This one is set in a secluded village, and the various sights and sounds (misty beaches, sparsely populated streets, unfriendly taverns) are essential in locating the concealed deeds of mayhem and murder. Humpheys handles this aspect with the assurance of a master, but his real skill lies in the flinty-edged characterization of his dramatis personae - not least his heroine, PC Sarah Delaney. Against her will, Delaney is dispatched to the little-frequented village of Compton on the Norfolk coast to look into a nasty incident. Two corpses have been sighted on the beach, but before she can investigate properly, the bodies have been claimed by the sea. And as Sarah slowly unearths the dark and dangerous secrets behind the deaths, she's also forced to confront troubling problems from her own past in the village: Compton is the place where a man she loved once lived - before his sudden death. Sleeping Partner was an auspicious and impressive debut for James Humphreys, and this successor displays the same casual assurance, notably in its nimble plotting. The trick in novels such as this is to pay out just as many revelations as are necessary to keep the reader thirsting for more - and that's just what Humphreys does here. It's a real pleasure to be wrong-footed by the author as often as we are in this accomplished piece." - Kirkus UK 'Not a line out of place - a delight to read' Birmingham Post

| Setting | |||
| All the locations are real places in Norfolk, though some of the geography and place-names have been changed. Wells, Holme-next-the-Sea, Hunstanton and Burnham Market are all pretty recognisable if you know the north Norfolk coast. There are also some scenes in Norwich, including the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. | |||
